1581 - Frances Drake, an English sea captain completes circumnavigation of world.
1655 - The miraculous statue entitled the Infant of Prague is solemnly crowned by command of Cardinal Harrach.
1814 - Napoleon Bonaparte (French) abdicates for the first time. There was a lull in fighting over the winter of 1813 while both the Russians and the French rebuilt their forces; Napoleon had no choice but to give up.
1818 – US Congress decided that national flag is 13 red & white stripes & 20 stars.
1850 - City of Los Angeles incorporated
1899 - South Africa had a chance to record their first Test victory in the second Test, after dismissing England for 99, then scoring 177 themselves. 330 from England set them a challenging 246. But the South Africans collapsed again and were bowled out by Haigh (6 for 11) and Trott (4 for 19) for a feeble 35 off only 114 balls.
1905 - Earthquake in Kangra (India) kills 20000. It measured 7.8Mg on Richter scale.
1930 – English player Andrew Sandham makes Test Cricket 1st triple century (325) against West Indies.
1930 – English Player Les Ames makes the 1st Test Cricket century by a wicketkeeper (149)
1947 - UN's International Civil Aviation Organization forms (ICAO). Its headquarters are located in the Quebec, Canada. It helps in monitoring the international air transport.
1949 - North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) treaty signed (Wash DC). It headquarters in Brussels, Belgium and the organization constitutes a system of collective defense whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party.
1958 - 1st march against nuclear weapons (England)
1960 - Senegal declares independence from France. Senegal covers a land area of almost 197,000 square kilometers (76,000 sq mi), and has an estimated population of about 14 million. Dakar is the capital.

1979 - President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto of Pakistan is executed. He was the founder of Pakistan People Party (PPP), 4th Prez & 9th PM of the country.
2002 - The Angolan government and UNITA rebels sign a peace treaty ending the Angolan Civil War.
