1713 - Dutch State-Gen signs peace with France; Netherland loses Orange Princedom
1787 - Philadelphia's Free African Society forms, whose goal was to create a non-denominational religious organization that served the spiritual, economic and social needs of Philadelphia’s African-American community.

1877 - Catcher's mask 1st used in a baseball game
1892 - George C Blickensderfer patents portable typewriter. It was much smaller, lighter, and cheaper than other typewriters. It also featured a type wheel that was easily removed to change the typeface.


1896 - Stamasia Portrisi is 1st woman to win a marathon (5:30 in Athens)


1905 - French Dufaux brothers test helicopter but failed. Their work paved a foundation of Igor Sikorsky design. Additionally Paul Corno’s copter design (1907) also helps Igor.


1908 - Fire makes 17,000 homeless in Chelsea Massachusetts


1911 - 1st non-stop London-Paris flight (Pierre Prier in 3h56m)


1938 - 1st US law requiring medical tests for marriage licenses (NY)


1946 - Syria gains independence from France. It is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the West, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest. Later they officially announced a flag for their country.


1951 - Israeli Knesset officially designated April 13 as Holocaust Day


1961 - Yuri Alexeyevich Gagarin becomes 1st person to orbit Earth (Vostok 1). Gagarin became an international celebrity, and was awarded many medals and honours, including Hero of the Soviet Union.


1973 - France recognizes North Vietnam after UN accord peace.


1973 - Sudan adopts constitution


1973 - Swaziland suspends constitution


1980 - Samuel Doe takes control of Liberia in a coup d'etat, ending over 130 years of national democratic presidential succession.

2009 - President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian National Authority makes a courtesy phone call to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, restarting the Palestinian-Israeli dialogue


2010 - A train derailed near Merano, Italy
, after running into a landslide, causing nine deaths and injuring 28 people.
