Famous Events:

374 - Comet 1P/374 E1 (Halley) approaches within 0.0884 AUs of Earth. These kinda comets are short period & visible to naked eye from Earth. Usually occurs once in 75 years. Next occurrence may be, by mid 2061.

705 - Greek pope John VII chosen as successor to John VI.  He was the 1st pope to be son of Byzantine official. Well educated & contributed much to Roman architecture.


1572 - In the Eighty Years' War, the Watergeuzen capture Brielle from the Spaniards, gaining the first foothold on land for what would become the Dutch Republic. This war was also known as ‘Dutch War of Republic’.


1578 - William Harvey of England was the 1st person to describe the complete details of Systematic Circulation & Properties of Blood being pumped to heart.


1700 - April Fools' Day pranks were popularized. This tradition of April fooling became popular in England sometime in the early 1700s. It's speculated that the whole thing got started when nations changed from the Julian to Gregorian calendars, with those who forgot or didn't hear about the change being the "fools."


1778 - Oliver Pollock, a New Orleans businessman, creates "$" symbol. The town of Pollock in eastern Grant Parish, Louisiana, is named in his honor.
 

1793 - Volcano Unsen on Japan erupts killing about 53,000. This collapse also triggered a mega tsunami that recorded as worst-ever volcanic-related disaster.


1826 – American Inventor ‘Samuel Morey’ patents internal combustion engine, which results in new dimension in motor transportation.
1853 – Cincinnati, Ohio became 1st US city to pay fire fighters a regular salary.


1867 - Singapore, Penang & Malacca become British crown colonies. This period saw Singapore establish itself as an important trading port and developed into a major city with rapid increase in population.


1881 - Anti-Jewish riots in Jerusalem.
1889 - 1st dishwashing machine marketed (Chicago). It is a mechanical device for cleaning dishes and eating utensils. Dishwashers can be found in restaurants and private homes.


1891 - London-Paris telephone connection opens.


1910 - Dumitru Dan (Romania) completes a 62,137 mile (100,000 m) walk
1918 - Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF) was established. Only 7 years after the Wright brothers invented the airplane, the RAF was formed. By November 1918, they had over 20,000 planes and about 300,000 pilots and crew.


1924 - Hitler was sent to jail. He was sentenced for an attempted coup known as the Beer Hall Putsch, but the trial brought him a lot of good publicity. He spent nine months in jail, during which time he wrote Mein Kampf, and came out more powerful that ever.


1931 - Earthquake devastate Managua Nicaragua, kills 2,000

1931 - Jackie Mitchell (Massachusetts ) became 1st female in professional baseball.


1933 - Walter Reginald "Wally" Hammond (Eng) scores 336* v NZ at Auckland, 47 fours 10 sixes. This record remained one player’s highest innings score till 1936.

 
1946 - 400,000 US mine workers strike over salary hike issue.
1954 - Earthquake/tsunami ravages Aleutians, 200 killed
1955 - EOKA-bomb attacks against British government buildings in Cyprus

1956 - Violent clashes in Algeria, kills at least 380 over political imbroglio.

1960 - 1st weather satellite launched (TIROS 1) which was built by RCA Astro Electronics, NJ.


1970 - A bill that banned cigarette advertising on radio and TV was signed by President Richard Nixon. It was signed at the insistence of public health advocates.
1973 - Japan allows its citizens to own gold.


1973 – John Lennon & Yoko Ono form a new country with no laws or boundaries, called Nutopia. Its national anthem is silence. Its flag is White color only. This move had taken on the account of political asylum.


1976 - Stephen Wozniak & Steven Jobs founded Apple Computer.

1986 - World oil prices dip below $10 a barrel
2001 - Same-sex marriage becomes legal in the Netherlands, which is the 1st country to allow it.
2004 - Google introduces its Gmail product to the public.



2009 - Croatia and Albania joined NATO
